Mixed Sentiments: Economic Ratings Rise, But Biden’s Approval Stays Steady

In a recent survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, Americans appear to have a slightly more positive perception of the economy. 

Thirty-five percent of respondents described the economy as “good,” marking a modest increase from the 30 percent reported in December. 

This positive shift is more pronounced when compared to January 2023, where only 24 percent viewed the economy favorably.

Persistent Partisan Divides

Despite the overall improvement in economic sentiment, a significant partisan divide remains evident. 

Democrats, with 58 percent, express a positive outlook on the economy, while only 15 percent of Republicans share the same view. 

This divergence is a continuation from December, where 53 percent of Democrats considered the economy good compared to a mere 8 percent of Republicans.

Overall Approval Lags Behind

While economic indicators show improvement, President Biden’s overall approval ratings have not experienced a parallel uptick. 

The survey reveals that approximately 38 percent of respondents approve of Biden’s overall performance, a figure that has persisted over the past year. 

Similarly, around 35 percent approve of how the president is handling the economy, indicating a stable rating compared to previous months.

Partisan Split on Approval Ratings

Partisan differences are starkly evident in approval ratings. 

A significant 70 percent of Democrats express approval of Biden’s overall job performance, while only 7 percent of Republicans share the same sentiment. 

On economic matters, 65 percent of Democrats approve of Biden’s approach, with a mere 7 percent of Republicans concurring.

Generational Divide in Democratic Approval

Interestingly, the survey delves into generational nuances within the Democratic camp. 

Younger Democrats, aged 18 to 39, are more likely to express disapproval of Biden’s overall job performance, with only 53 percent approving. 

In contrast, a more significant 78 percent of Democrats aged 40 and older approve of the president’s overall performance.

Varied Perspectives on Economic Policies

The generational divide within Democrats also extends to their views on Biden’s handling of the economy. 

Forty-four percent of 18-39 year-olds express approval of his economic policies, while over 75 percent of those aged 40 and older endorse the president’s approach.

In conclusion, while the survey reflects a modest improvement in the public’s perception of the economy, President Biden’s approval ratings remain relatively stagnant. 

The enduring partisan divides, coupled with generational nuances within the Democratic party, offer a multifaceted view of public sentiment on both the economy and the president’s overall performance. 

The coming months may bring further insights into the dynamics shaping these perspectives.
