Elon Musk’s Neuralink Implants Brain Chip in First Human

In a historic development, Neuralink, the brain-chip startup founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has successfully implanted its innovative brain-computer interface (BCI) in a human patient. 

Musk announced on January 29 that the first recipient is recovering well after the procedure, marking a significant milestone for the company’s ambitious goals.

Promising Initial Results and Neuron Spike Detection

Elon Musk shared the exciting news on the social media platform X, stating, “Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.”

Neuron spikes refer to the activity of neurons, which are cells that utilize electrical and chemical signals to transmit information within the brain and to the body, as defined by the National Institute of Health.

FDA Clearance Paves the Way for Human Trials

Neuralink received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year to conduct its inaugural trial involving human subjects. 

This regulatory approval was a crucial step toward realizing Neuralink’s mission of assisting patients in overcoming paralysis and various neurological conditions.

In September, the company confirmed approval for recruiting participants in the human trial. 

The study employs a robotic system for the precise placement of the brain-computer interface implant in a brain region responsible for controlling movement intentions. 

Neuralink’s initial objective is to empower individuals to control a computer cursor or keyboard solely through their thoughts.

The “Telepathy” Project Emerges as the First Product

Elon Musk revealed that the first product resulting from Neuralink’s groundbreaking work will be named “Telepathy.” 

This underscores the company’s vision of creating a seamless connection between the human brain and external devices through its advanced brain-chip technology.

Neuralink’s PRIME Study: Evaluating Safety and Functionality

Neuralink’s ongoing PRIME Study represents a critical phase in assessing the safety and functionality of its wireless brain-computer interface and the associated surgical robot. 

The ultra-fine threads of the implants play a crucial role in transmitting signals within participants’ brains.

Despite these significant advancements, Neuralink has faced scrutiny over its safety protocols. 

Recent reports highlighted the company’s fine for violating U.S. Department of Transportation rules related to transporting hazardous materials. 

Additionally, concerns were raised by lawmakers regarding the safety of Neuralink’s technology following veterinary records indicating issues with implants in monkeys, including paralysis, seizures, and brain swelling.

Addressing Safety Concerns

Elon Musk addressed safety concerns in a social media post on September 10, stating that “no monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant.”

He emphasized the company’s cautious approach, selecting “terminal” monkeys to minimize risks to healthy individuals.
