Trump Mega Donor Backs RFK Jr.’s Independent Presidential Bid, Stirring Electoral Dynamics

Recent disclosures to the Federal Election Commission revealed that Timothy Mellon, a major donor supporting Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, has contributed substantial amounts to the independent presidential candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The donations have raised questions about potential impacts on the electoral landscape, with polls suggesting Kennedy’s candidacy may draw votes away from both Trump and Democrat Joe Biden in a likely November general election.

Mellon, heir to the Mellon banking fortune, donated $10 million to the American Values 2024 super PAC supporting Kennedy in the second half of 2023.

This follows an earlier $5 million donation in April 2023. Mellon’s contributions to a pro-Trump group, MAGA Inc, mirrored a similar pattern, with a $5 million donation in April 2023 and an additional $10 million in the latter half of the same year.

Political analysts posit that Kennedy’s independent bid could potentially influence the distribution of votes in critical states during the general election.

While some suggest it may siphon votes from Biden, a December Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that Kennedy could draw more support from Biden than Trump.

The poll demonstrated a 5-point lead for Trump nationally when respondents were given the option to vote for Kennedy.

However, a January Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Trump maintaining a six-point lead, even when third-party candidates, including Kennedy, were included as options.

It’s important to note that nationwide surveys may not fully capture the complexities of the electoral college contest, which will be decided in a handful of competitive states where independent voters wield significant influence.

Donor Motivations and Political Speculation

Democratic strategist Lis Smith expressed concerns about Mellon’s substantial funding of pro-Kennedy efforts, suggesting it might be an effort to benefit Trump.

“Numbers don’t lie – it’s clear Donald Trump and his biggest donors believe that RFK Jr. will help him in this election,” Smith remarked.

She cautioned that Kennedy’s candidacy could pose a threat to those aiming to keep Trump out of the Oval Office.

As of now, Reuters has not been able to reach Mellon for comment on his motivations behind supporting Kennedy’s independent run.

The evolving dynamics of this election season, with major donors backing independent candidates, raise intriguing questions about the potential impacts on the final electoral outcome, particularly in closely contested states where independent voters play a pivotal role.
