Kristi Noem Supports Texas’s Defiance of Supreme Court Border Ruling

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem expressed her stance on CNN’s State of the Union, encouraging Texas to defy the recent Supreme Court decision regarding the removal of razor wire at the Southern border.

This follows a significant legal victory for President Joe Biden’s administration, allowing the removal of wire along the U.S. southern border.

Noem, who had previously offered razor wire assistance to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, insisted that Texas should stand its ground, enforcing state laws and protecting constitutional rights.

Supreme Court Decision and Background

President Biden’s administration secured a win last week as the Supreme Court voted 5-4 in favor of allowing the removal of razor wire along the U.S. southern border.

This decision followed a request from the White House to vacate an injunction from the Fifth Circuit in October, which had blocked federal agents from cutting down the wire in Texas aimed at deterring illegal migration.

“Texas should stand their ground, they should enforce their state law and go back to the constitutional rights that they have been granted to protect their state sovereignty,” Noem emphasized.

Republican Support for Texas Measures

In August, 14 Republican-led states, including Virginia, provided resources and personnel to Operation Lone Star—an effort in Texas to apprehend illegal immigrants and make criminal arrests.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin endorsed Texas’ handling of the border situation, deploying soldiers and airmen to assist Texas’ National Guard.

“The southern border has experienced tremendous challenges with human trafficking, drug trafficking, the flow of people, and threats to national security,” said Christian Martinez, spokesperson for Governor Youngkin.

Texas Governor Abbott’s Stance:

Texas Governor Abbott has remained firm in his support of razor wire policies, asserting the state’s constitutional right to self-defense.

Abbott claims Texas is “acting on that authority, as well as state law, to secure the Texas border” by using razor wire.

“Texas has a constitutional right to self-defense, and his state was ‘acting on that authority, as well as state law, to secure the Texas border,'” Abbott stated.

Diverse Views and Democratic Opposition

While some Republicans argue that Texas is right to stand its ground, some Democrats, including Texas Representative Joaquin Castro and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, are urging Biden to federalize Texas’ National Guard to prevent Abbott from defying the Supreme Court ruling.

“Biden must follow this example of bold, decisive leadership to end this crisis before it gets worse,” O’Rourke emphasized.

Biden’s Shift and Ongoing Negotiations

President Biden, embracing tougher measures, including the potential shutdown of the US-Mexico border, marks a shift from his earlier messaging.

The Senate is currently engaged in negotiations that may result in a vote on a deal in the coming weeks.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has refrained from committing to putting such an agreement for a vote if it doesn’t meet conservative demands to curb migration and bolster enforcement.

“Securing the border through these negotiations is a win for America. If you’re serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill and I will sign it,” Biden stated.

The unfolding situation at the Southern border remains a focal point of political discussions, with divergent opinions on the appropriate measures to address the complex challenges.
