UAW President Counters Trump’s Criticism with Strong Endorsement of Biden

United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain responded robustly to former President Trump’s recent criticism, where he referred to Fain as a “dope” for endorsing President Biden.

Fain, not backing down, reaffirmed his support for Biden and seized the opportunity to highlight the stark differences in the track records of Biden and Trump regarding their support for unions and the working class.

Contrasting Legacies: Biden and Trump on Union Support

In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Fain emphasized the unprecedented nature of having a sitting U.S. president actively engaging with working-class people and supporting them on picket lines.

He drew attention to Trump’s actions, accusing him of claiming support for union workers while aligning with non-union business owners, showcasing what Fain labeled as a “rope-a-dope” strategy by Trump.

“It’s what Trump does best. It’s a rope-a-dope. He wants you to look over here while over here, he’s taking everything away,” remarked Fain.

He further criticized Trump’s divide-and-conquer tactics, asserting that it has historically favored the billionaire and corporate class.

Endorsement and Election Dynamics

Fain recently endorsed Biden’s reelection campaign, providing a substantial boost to the President’s bid for the White House.

While the UAW supported Biden in 2020, there was initial hesitation in endorsing his reelection due to concerns over the administration’s electric vehicle policies.

Trump, eyeing a likely rematch with Biden in the fall, has actively sought support among blue-collar workers.

Twitter Feud and Fain’s Counterpunch

Following Fain’s endorsement of Biden and his criticism of Trump, the former president took to social media to attack the UAW leader, calling for his removal.

Unfazed, Fain used his appearance on MSNBC to escalate his critique of Trump, accusing him of representing the “billionaire class” and condemning the 2017 tax reform as benefiting the rich while providing “minuscule benefits” for the working class.

“Labor is going to lead this fight, and we’re in it,” asserted Fain.

He highlighted the success of the UAW’s contract campaign in exposing gross inequalities between companies and workers, drawing parallels to the political landscape.

Fain urged members to focus on facts, decrying the gross inequality between the few at the top and everyone else at the bottom.

Fighting Inequality: Labor’s Perspective

Closing his remarks, Fain underscored the role of labor in leading the fight against inequality, urging members to base their decisions on facts rather than alternative narratives.

He criticized Trump’s approach to social welfare programs, accusing the former president of advocating cuts detrimental to the working class.

In conclusion, Shawn Fain’s response to Trump’s criticism not only defended his endorsement of Biden but also served as a platform to emphasize the stark differences in policy and approach between the two leaders concerning unions and the working class.

The UAW president’s firm stance positions the union as a key player in the ongoing battle against inequality.
