Speaker Johnson Clarifies Stance on Border Deal: Duty to Protect Citizens Prevails

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) refuted claims on Tuesday that his resistance to a bipartisan Senate deal combining border and migration policy changes with Ukraine aid is motivated by a desire to assist former President Trump in his potential 2024 presidential campaign.

Johnson dismissed the notion, stating firmly, “No. That’s absurd. We have a responsibility here to do our duty.”

Emphasis on Duty and Protecting Citizens

“Our duty is to do right by the American people, to protect the people. The first and most important job of the federal government is protecting citizens. We’re not doing that under President Biden,”

House Republicans’ Stance

House Republicans have consistently advocated for addressing migration issues on the U.S.-Mexico border before approving any additional Ukraine aid.

This has led to a bipartisan effort in the Senate to work on legislation that intertwines both issues, a move met with skepticism from Johnson.

He expressed concern that if the rumored details of the Senate deal hold true, the bill would be “dead on arrival” in the House.

Trump’s Influence on Republicans

Former President Trump’s influence on the border deal negotiations is evident, with him urging Republicans, specifically Johnson, to ensure a “perfect” deal on the border.

Trump’s emphasis on comprehensive solutions aligns with House Republicans’ stance on only approving Ukraine aid if migration issues are addressed first.

GOP’s Opposition and Leverage

Johnson acknowledged the limited majority in the House and emphasized the GOP’s efforts to leverage every available tool to address the border issue.

The Speaker is unwavering in his commitment to finding a comprehensive solution to border security.

Accusations from Democrats

Democrats have accused Trump and Republicans of rejecting the border deal to gain political leverage in the 2024 elections, rather than genuinely addressing the issue.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre accused House Republicans of choosing between solving a problem and scoring political points.

GOP Pushback on Deal Provisions

One major point of contention in the rumored provisions of the Senate deal is the executive branch’s power to halt migration if illegal crossings exceed 5,000 per day.

Johnson and other Republicans argue that this threshold is too high, emphasizing the goal of achieving zero illegal crossings.

Communication with Former President Trump

Johnson revealed that he has engaged in extensive discussions with former President Trump about the border deal.

The Speaker highlighted Trump’s early focus on border security, noting that he ran on the platform of building a wall to address the growing crisis.

In conclusion, Speaker Johnson’s position on the border deal underscores his commitment to protecting American citizens, while also navigating the influence and expectations of former President Trump.
