Joint US-UK Airstrikes Target Houthi Strongholds in Yemen

The United States and the United Kingdom, in a significant military operation, conducted coordinated airstrikes against eight locations in Yemen used by the Houthi rebels. 

This operation, conducted on Monday night, represents the second time the allies have jointly targeted the Houthi’s missile-launching facilities.

International Coalition Effort

The mission saw contributions from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, primarily in intelligence and surveillance capacities. 

In a joint statement, these nations emphasized their commitment to de-escalating tensions and restoring stability in the Red Sea region. 

They stated, “Our aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea, but let us reiterate our warning to Houthi leadership: we will not hesitate to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways in the face of continued threats.”

Specific Targets and UK’s Role

Targets of these strikes included a Houthi underground storage site and locations linked to their missile and air surveillance capabilities. 

The UK’s Ministry of Defense confirmed its active involvement, with four Royal Air Force Typhoon jets hitting multiple targets near Sanaa airfield. 

Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said of the strikes, they were “aimed at degrading Houthi capabilities” and would “deal another blow to their limited stockpiles and ability to threaten global trade.”

US Military’s Assessment of the Strikes

A senior U.S. military official reported that the operation involved dropping between 25 and 30 munitions, achieving successful impacts at all targeted sites. 

This includes the destruction of advanced weapons in the underground facility. The official said this is the first time such advanced weapons were targeted.

Background of Escalating Tensions

This joint operation follows a series of attacks, with U.S. and British forces previously striking over 60 targets across 28 locations. 

These actions were in response to ongoing Houthi drone and missile attacks on commercial shipping, which have intensified since the Israel-Hamas conflict in October. 

The recent strikes signal an escalation in the military response to the Houthi’s persistent assaults.

The Houthi’s media outlets reported multiple raids in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, affecting residential areas. 

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Joe Biden had discussed the need for targeted military action earlier, aligning their strategies against Houthi capabilities.

The latest series of strikes marks the eighth U.S. military operation against Houthi sites this month. 

Despite these actions, the Houthis have continued their aggressive campaign, targeting commercial and potentially U.S. Navy ships. 

The Biden administration, recognizing the threat posed by the Houthis, has re-designated them as a global terrorist organization, aiming to cut off their financial support while ensuring humanitarian aid to Yemen.

The persistent nature of Houthi attacks and the increasing military response from the U.S. and its allies point towards a precarious regional situation. 

Hussein al-Ezzi, a Houthi official in their Foreign Ministry, said, 

“America and Britain will undoubtedly have to prepare to pay a heavy price and bear all the dire consequences of this blatant aggression.”
